This was upgraded to a Winter Storm Warning for counties along the Illinois/Wisconsin state line during the early afternoon of the 28th. A Winter Weather Advisory was issued on the afternoon of January 27th for far northern Illinois.During the evening of January 28th into the early morning hours of January 29th, precipitation expanded across most of northern Illinois and featured a mix of types, including freezing rain that produced a light icing in some spots, making travel hazardous.The COOP Observer 3 miles southwest of Chicago Midway International Airport measured 1.2". The official snowfall for Chicago was 2.3" observed at Chicago O'Hare International Airport.Other snowfall amounts from the heaviest snow area in far northern Illinois were primarily between 4.5" and 7", with locally higher totals, including up to 8.3" near Woodstock, 7.3" in Hebron, and 7.1" near Harvard.The official snowfall for Rockford was 5.1" observed at Chicago Rockford International Airport.Please see NWS Quad Cities' post-event page for northwest Illinois snow totals and NWS Milwaukee's post-event page for southern Wisconsin snow totals. A slow-moving weather system brought multiple bands of heavy snow to far northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin on January 28th, which brought one inch per hour snow rates at times and hazardous travel, including to the I-90 corridor, the Rockford area, and the northern Chicago suburbs.
